It isn't just about Schrodinger's rapist, it's also Schrodinger's stalker, murderer, robber, or annoying conversationalist.

Honestly, it doesn't matter if it's sex, touching, or conversation, No means No and should be respected.

Work function

A recent post made me think about something which has been really bothering me.

My husband is in the military. There is some sort of dinner being held in New Jersey (we're in New York) that he HAS to go to. It's a Christmas Banquet or something like that. Every command has one in early to mid December so I'm used to it.

Here's what sucks (other than I have to find a gown to wear): They asked my husband yesterday what we want to eat. There are 3 dishes on the menu. Steak, chicken, or salmon. I asked my husband if there was a vegetarian platter and he said there isn't. They ALWAYS have a vegetarian platter at these things and even my omni husband is upset about their not having one.

I don't know what to do. I had him order the salmon for me but I don't want to eat it. If the dish comes with a salad I will probably just eat that.

What should I do about this though? I feel it's an outrage that they don't have a veg platter! I want to complain to someone but I don't know who to complain to without getting my husband into trouble.

Advice? Not going isn't an option and neither is bringing my own food.

Help Please!

I'm trying to make a Christmas present for someone who recently discovered they have a gluten and wheat allergy. Can anyone suggest some recipes that deal with these obstacles and is made with a sweetner?

Something in a healthy way!

Help

I deleted my folder with Vegetarian/Vegan websites and recipes. I already checked my recycling bin and it is not in there. :) I should be more careful when cleaning up my computer. If someone can help me with some websites and recipes they love. Thanks.
Also simple and easy Vegetarian recipes too. The websites were recipe websites, news websites, clothing websites. It was just a big misc of them I have been told about through the years or read about somewhere. I am googling websites now, but you never know what I might miss. Thanks everyone.

Ilya After 8 Months

The little rascal continues to grow in so many ways. He's been familiar with his basic shapes (squares, circles, ovals, triangles, rectangles, etc.) for a couple of months now, in terms of being able to identify them in a book. (They taught him the basic shapes in day care, and when they do something there, we try to reinforce it at home.) But this morning, as we were headed downstairs, another of those lightbulbs clicked on: the doors were rectangles. The pictures on the wall were rectangles. The cat doors were rectangles. Shazam - rectangles everywhere!

He can count to ten, and a little past. He clearly understands what two or three of something are. He's singing gradually longer fragments of songs we sing him, or that they sing at day care. His pronunciation is still somewhat indistinct at times - when he came home singing parts of "Ring Around the Rosey," his rendition of the "Ashes, Ashes" part sounded more like "Aw, shit, aw, shit"! Needless to say, Jacki and I corrected him on this, but we weren't able to keep a straight face while doing so.

He's gradually picking up his ABCs, through various means: he can sing parts of the ABC song, he knows what many of the letters look like, and for many or most of the letters, he knows words that start with that letter.

He's getting better with his sentences and phrases - lots of two-word subject-verb sentences, occasional three-word subject-verb-object sentences, lots of 2-3 word phrases.

We went to the (Gulf coast) beach in Florida for a week in early October, and he loved the water. We took care to keep him in water he could stand up in, but he did lose his footing every now and then, of course. But when he did, he was his usual fearless self when his head went under: he'd quickly right himself, and would come up grinning. He's definitely getting swimming lessons next summer.

He still likes it, when he's just waking up, or when it's time to go to bed, when I carry him up or down the stairs from his bedroom to the living room. Which is more than fine by me - it's one of those things where I feel the sweetness of it every time. I know that there will come a time when my little boy decides he's too big for Daddy to carry him up the stairs, and when that time comes, I will miss it very much. When that happens, I know there'll be new things to take its place - riding bikes together, him being Daddy's little helper at Daddy's workbench, stuff like that that I'm eagerly looking forward to. But still, you'd like to be able to hang onto it all, even though you can't. (The unidirectionality of time is a real bitch.)

I really expected to be a father much earlier in life than this. But it's all the sweeter for the wait. I feel very lucky that the currents of my life have finally brought me to this place.

Customer Service 101

So I ordered something from a small company. Their website says it typically takes them 1-5 days to ship an order out, and I ordered USPS priority mail, which typically takes 2-3 days. I only took a closer look at this information when the order still hadn't arrived in 9 days, and I thought something might be amiss.

I find out from reading their website that they have been plagued with both the flu and equipment malfunctions, and that some orders have been delayed by a few days. This information was posted on their company's discussion boards, but no e-mail was sent directly to any customer with pending orders.

When I suggested that sending such an e-mail might have been more appropriate, I was told that if I wanted to know what's going on, I needed to subscribe to their announcements forum; if I chose not to, then they feel they don't owe customers any other kind of contact, as it was only a few days delay, and as 9 days is within their normal timeframe (which they are now saying is actually 7-10 days).

First, I feel like I'm being preached at, that not knowing my order might be delayed is *my* fault; second, they don't do a very good job of taking a conciliatory tone with a customer; and third, they seem to think that web-based information dissemination is adequate, and it's more than any of those bigger companies would offer, so they don't need to do any more.

Do you think this is acceptable customer service?

(It's a shame, really - I will likely order from them again only because they are the only people to offer certain products, and they do seem to offer a valuable service, but the tone was so snotty it just really, really put me off.)

Edited to add: They're sticking by their 7-10 day timeframe (no guarantees, of course). I ordered it on the 11th, which means that under normal circumstances I would have expected to receive it tomorrow (at the latest). They just told me it should go out today, which means I won't receive it until Monday, the 23rd. That's a total of 12 days, so they still missed the mark. A simple "FYI/just in case" e-mail would have prevented me even having to visit their website, let alone get into this with them on their discussion boards.

a quick little bit of background. i'm currently experiencing all kinds of stress from "boys are morons" type issues. as a result, i'm not sleeping much, and haven't had much of an appetite for the past week or so. in order to make sure i eat, i've been eating a lot of fruit, because i can leave it around and it eat over an extended period of time, and junk food, because i may not be hungry, but it still tastes oh, so good :D as a result, my digestive tract hates me. i either can't take a shit, OR have days where my ass hurts and every couple hours it's like OMGMUSTPOOPNOW. it's awesome. and by awesome, i mean fail. but at least my ass doesn't hurt today >.

Raspberry tart

Hi guys,
I would really appreciate it if one of you had a simple, easy-as-possible recipe for raspberry tart (it's my first). I know, a tart. It's not exactly a no-frills food. But I want to make a tart without raspberry liqueor or some other hard to find ingredient, or nuts.
A tart that's lemon or blueberry or some other fruit that's in supermarkets is fine.
Thank you!

Yea, I know it is old... But I'm just procastinating and found it...

Any album by Silvio Rodríguez, but most likely Unicornio. C'mon, that was one of my favorite songs of my childhood! But seriously, check him out on youtube.

Meal Help: New Strict Vegetarian and Fussy Eater.

My partner just spent all day at a conference on food safety and how regulations aren't being enforced so he is now afraid of...well, just about anything that can be bought at a supermarket. I have no issues with this, I actually much prefer locally grown, organic, family farm food anyway and have been trying to get him into it since we started dating. What I'm having problems with is coming up with nutritionally balanced meals for a strict vegetarian. I have a few dietary restrictions that make even lacto-ovo a royal pain in the ass to plan for so I'm used to using dairy and eggs in most things.

We can get anything in season (greater DC area) pretty easily. I'm allergic to nuts of just about any kind, but he can eat them. Fast is good, cheap is better. He claims he hates all beans and bean products, but he's only ever tried pinto (refried) and black. I was raised on Mexican food, if it's a bean I'll probably eat it. We just found out we're both allergic to soy (which sucks, I miss chocolate soy milk). I'm a decently good cook, he's been known to burn water (no, really). Things that I can add egg or dairy to at the end for myself would be best, but I can handle planning his meals separate from my own. Is this at all possible? I've been slowly reforming his "vegetables are garnish" eating habits for a few years so I'd really like to take advantage of the situation. I'd just also like to avoid a vitamin deficiency.

When reality turns into dreams.

Yesterday, I spent a good half hour or so watching zit-popping and cyst-draining videos on YouTube. Why did I do this? I do not know. I left for the mechanic feeling rather ill, actually.

Then, last night, I had a long dream about many zits and cysts doing all kinds of fun pus-and-blood-filled things, like shooting pus-bullets across the room and getting pus-filled blood everywhere.

Even better, my boyfriend woke me up this morning to show me the huge whitehead that has developed inside his nostril.

So I work at City Hall in my town.. my small redneck, close-minded town. And today is their Thanksiving Luncheon that the firefighters cook out at the secondary fire department for all the city employees. I'm an Administrative Assistant so I'm not high up in the rankings of city officials. Anyway, my boss was planning on shutting down our department at noon today so all of us could go to the luncheon. I asked her a little while ago if I could take my lunch at 11AM, my usual lunch time. She was like "You're not going to the luncheon?" and I was like, "Well there's not anything I can eat and I'm not big on big functions like that." And she was like "Oh, okay.. well the city manager is going to be disappointed.. it's only once a year.. you sure you don't want to come.. it's good and it'll be fun." And I told her I needed to go home to pick something up anyway and she said okay but I know she didn't approve at all and it's like I'm this horrible person now because I'm not going to the luncheon. How would you handle this? Have any of you been in a situation like this before? Should I just go and suck it up and not eat lunch and starve all day just so I can make an appearance? From the menu, it looks like I could eat a roll and maybe some mashed potatoes but everything else either has meat or meat broth in it. I hate how my personal choices about my life interfere with things like this, and honestly, I don't give a shit about politics so I don't like to play into that political crap of showing up just for the sake of looking good for the department.

Royal Icing

Hello, all!

I have been searching for a good royal icing recipe to decorate sugar cookies with. A lot of the ones I've tried, aren't very tasty at all. Something using meringue powder instead of egg whites preferably. Any help would be appreciated!

Jam Crumb Cake

Does anyone watch The Shield? Kramer and I have breezed through the first four seasons in a very short period of time. I'm not sure what's so addicting about it, but I really like the show! I'm surprised, too, because I'm usually not a fan of cop dramas. FX does it again! We also found out today that LOST starts on February 2, 2010. The countdown begins!

I needed to bake something quickly the other day, and I have had this jam cake recipe in my bookmarks for years, but for some reason, I had never gotten around to making it. I don't know why I waited so long, because this cake took about an hour from start to finish and it was absolutely delicious! You can use any kind of jam that you like (I used strawberry), and its simplicity is what makes it so good. It's a light, buttery cake with a crunchy, cinnamon-y topping, gushing with sweet, sticky strawberry jam. Perfect for breakfast, as a snack, or for dessert! I highly recommend this cake, especially because all of its ingredients are pretty typical and are probably already in your home right now! Recipe on my blog at The Crepes of Wrath or after the cut.
